Black pride is a movement that encourages black

Black pride is a movement that encourages black people to celebrate black culture and embrace their African heritage.

In the United States, it was a direct response to racism especially during the Civil Rights Movement.

Related movements include
- black power,
- black nationalism,
-Black Panthers and Afrocentrism.

Beauty standards are a major theme of black pride. Black pride was represented in slogans such as "black is beautiful"
which challenged beauty standards. Prior to the black pride movement, the majority of black people straightened their hair or wore wigs. The return to natural hair styles such as the afro, cornrows, and dreadlocks were seen as expressions of black pride.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a variety of caustic products that contained bleaches, including laundry bleach were designed to be applied to afro-textured hair in combination with hot irons.

Popular until the 1960s, the conk hair style was achieved through the application of toxic lye, egg and potato mixture which immediately burned the scalp.

💣RELAXERS: Because nappy, kinky, curly hair was deemed inferior, ugly and unkempt, chemical relaxers increased in demand throughout the 1800s and 1900s.
These hair-care products designed to straighten hair, which were largely marketed by white-owned companies in African American publications, contained sodium hydroxide (lye) or guanidine hydroxide which resulted in severe hair breakage and thinning, slowing of hair growth, scalp damage, severy hair loss and health issues.

👁RELIEF... a sigh

In the United States, the successes of the civil rights movement, and the Black power and Black pride movements of the 1960s and 1970s, inspired African-Americans to adopt (or re-adopt) traditionally African styles. The "Afro" was worn as a political statement and started a movement toward self acceptance. While this movement influenced a generation it wasn't long before the need to conform to Eurocentric ideas of beauty took over...

Because of the prevalent notion that straight hair was more acceptable than kinky hair, many black people began re-exploring solutions for straightening, or relaxing their hair.

Before the captured boarded the slave ships, traffickers shaved the heads of the women in a brutal attempt to strip them of their humanity and culture.
As the women endured the rigors of slavery in America, braids became more functional.
Without time, resources or products, African-American women took to wearing their tresses in a more simplistic fashion. The women chose easier-to-manage styles, like single plaits, and used oils they had on hand, such as kerosene, to condition them.

Braids also served another purpose: They became a secret messaging system for slaves to communicate with one another underneath their masters’ noses. Tharps explains that “people would use braids as a map to freedom.” For instance, the number of plaits worn could indicate how many roads people needed to walk or where to meet someone to escape bondage.

Despite the immense difficulties they faced during slavery, African-American women did their best to hold on to the ancestral tradition of wearing meticulously braided styles.

However, Emancipation in 1865 brought about a longing to leave all things reminiscent of that horrific time behind. As Black women flocked to cities like Chicago and New York during the Great Migration and took jobs as domestics (one of the few positions available to them), braids soon became synonymous with backwardness. For some, plaits and cornrows were traded in for chemically straightened or pressed tresses. “A braid was a sign of unsophistication, a downgrade of [a Black woman’s] image,” Tharps says. African-American women wanted to look citified. With their newfound freedom, many chose to assimilate, and straight styles became the norm.

Members of the Wolof, Mende, Mandinka, Yoruba, Funlani, Igbo, and Ashanti all had different hairstyles that communicated who they were that connected them to their people, culture, history, and heritage.

The Yoruba of Nigeria, often shave the heads of newborns as a marker of the individual's arising from the world of spir-it. The head is also shaved again at death to signal the individuals return to the world of spi-rit.

Hair during slavery

When Europeans infiltrated Africa and Africans were forcibly brought to the Americas in the early 1600s, slave captures and sellers shaved the heads of all African women, men, and children.

The claimed purpose for this action was for sanitary reasons, to avoid carry and spread of germs and insects. Nonetheless shaving their heads stripped them of a lifeline to their home and a connection to their people

Hair was carefully groomed by those who understood the aesthetic standard, as the social implications of hair grooming were a significant part of community life. Dense, thick, clean, and neatly groomed hair was something highly admired and sought after. Hair groomers possessed unique styling skills, allowing them to create a variety of designs that met the local cultural standards. Hair was usually dressed according to local culture.

3) Prep your hair for braiding: make sure your hair and scalp are clean, hydrated moisturized and scealed. Avoid braiding hair that's already damaged.
4) WASH THE EXTENSIONS, prior to application. They contain chemically which you may be allergic to.
